The new image for the Institution

Heraldry originated with simple symbols used on shields and banners for recognition in battle. By the 14th century, it had become a complex pictorial language with its own regulatory bodies (courts of chivalry), used by noble families, corporate bodies, cities, and realms.

The heraldic shield proposed for use by the ICS and which we have applied for approval from the Lord Lyon, King of Arms is very symbolic of what our organisation stands for and what we all are involved with -  that being safety in construction.

The shield is masoned i.e. It is decorated with pointed brickwork (coloured terracotta) signifying construction.  In the centre of the Shield stands a white castle signifying safety.

The top third of the shield comprises a chief argent coloured white (this could also be silver, the colour of the metal used for an actual shield) which denotes dominion and authority. In the centre of this is placed an open book in gold outlined in red which means manifestation but to us learning and knowledge;to the left of the book is a helmet which when depicted on the shield means wisdom and security in defence (in our case secure in defence equates with safety); and to the right of the book is a gauntlet signifying a person with qualities of leadership. That role, of course, is one of the qualities referred to in the CDM Approved Code of Practice.
