About the ICS

Introduction

The Institution of Construction Safety (ICS) is a non-profit-making membership organisation registered in the U.K. The ICS was established in 1995 from the requirements of the Council Directive 92/57/EEC of 24 June 1992 on the implementation of minimum safety and health requirements at temporary or mobile construction sites and the resultant Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994.

The Construction Design and Management Regulations 1994, revised in 2007 and again in 2015 (latest changes in Northern Ireland were in 2016), provide the opportunity for design and construction professionals in the UK to consider aspects of safety and health in design, construction, maintenance and use in a professional capacity and to deploy such expertise in the furtherance of the ideal of a safe built environment, particularly in the reduction of construction related accidents and fatalities and workers health issues. This comes with responsibility and practitioners have to achieve a level of expertise in the Regulations and practise to a standard that can have industry wide recognition.

The ICS is a multi-disciplinary professional membership body dedicated to the continuous improvement of safety and health standards in the built environment. The ICS provides accreditation for any design or construction individual or organisation with an interest in and commitment to health and safety, wishing to undertake CDM dutyholder or advisor roles.

Objectives

The objectives of ICS are:

  1. To provide a focus, and unite in a common purpose, all those interested in reducing ill-health, injuries, damage and losses during the construction, maintenance and demolition of man-made structures.
  2. To encourage research into safer designs, construction methods, maintenance procedures and demolition techniques.
  3. To facilitate the free interchange of information between practitioners, and between industries, in order that best practices can be universally applied.
  4. To enhance and protect the standing of the professional CDM 2015 dutyholder or advisor through its membership requirements and independent third party accreditation scheme and registers.
  5. To provide assurance to all concerned that those on the ICS Registers are capable of fulfilling the role of CDM dutyholder or Advisor in accordance with the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 and all other relevant legislation.
